A "critical" climatic evaluation of last interglacial (MIS 5e) records from the Norwegian Sea ArchiMer
Bauch, Henning A.; Erlenkeuser, Helmut.
Sediment cores from the Norwegian Sea were studied to evaluate interglacial climate conditions of the marine isotope stage 5e (MIS 5e). Using planktic forminiferal assemblages as the core method, a detailed picture of the evolution of surface water conditions was derived. According to our age model, a step-like deglaciation of the Saalian ice sheets is noted between ca. 135 and 124.5 Kya, but the deglaciation shows little response with regard to surface ocean warming. From then on, the rapidly increasing abundance of subpolar forminifers, concomitant with decreasing iceberg indicators, provides evidence for the development of interglacial conditions sensu stricto (5e-ss), a period that lasted for about 9 Ky. As interpreted from the foraminiferal records,...

Direct terrestrial-marine correlation demonstrates surprisingly late onset of the last interglacial in central Europe ArchiMer

An interdisciplinary study of a small sedimentary basin at Neumark Nord 2 (NN2), Germany, has yielded a high-resolution record of the palaeomagnetic Blake Event, which we are able to place at the early part of the last interglacial pollen sequence documented from the same section. We use this data to calculate the duration of this stratigraphically important event at 3400 +/- 350 yr. More importantly, the Neumark Nord 2 data enables precise terrestrial marine correlation for the Eemian stage in central Europe. This shows a remarkably large time lag of ca. 5000 yr between the MIS 5e 'peak' in the marine record and the start of the last interglacial in this region.

Evidence for regional cooling, frontal advances, and East Greenland Ice Sheet changes during the demise of the last interglacial ArchiMer
Irvali, Nil; Ninnemann, Ulysses S.; Kleiven, Helga (kikki) F.; Galaasen, Eirik V.; Morley, Audrey; Rosenthal, Yair.
High-resolution lithic and sea surface climate records are used to portray the progression of North Atlantic climate, hydrography, and Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) activity through the peak of Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e into the last glacial inception. We use Eirik Drift sediment core MD03-2664 (57°26.34′N, 48°36.35′W), recovered south of Greenland, strategically located to monitor fluctuations in GIS extent and iceberg calving events. Our results show that a significant amount of ice-rafted debris (IRD) was present during the early MIS 5e, until gradually tapering off by 122 kyr BP due to a diminishing GIS. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the northern subpolar gyre reached peak values early in MIS 5e coinciding with peak insolation. Regional cooling...

Offset timing of climate oscillations during the last two glacial-interglacial transitions connected with large-scale freshwater perturbation ArchiMer
Jimenez-amat, Patricia; Zahn, Rainer.
Multidecadal to centennial planktic O-18 and Mg/Ca records were generated at Ocean Drilling Program Site 976 (ODP976) in the Alboran Sea. The site is in the flow path of Atlantic inflow waters entering the Mediterranean and captured North Atlantic signals through the surface inflow and the atmosphere. The records reveal similar climatic oscillations during the last two glacial-to-interglacial transitions, albeit with a different temporal pacing. Glacial termination 1 (T1) was marked by Heinrich event 1 (H1), post-H1 BOlling/AllerOd warming, and Younger Dryas (YD) cooling. During T2 the H11 O-18 anomaly was twice as high and lasted 30% longer than during H1. The post-H11 warming marked the start of MIS5e while the subsequent YD-style cooling occurred during...

Paleoceanographic and climatic teleconnections between the subarctic and subtropical North Atlantic during the last interglacial (MIS 5e) ArchiMer
Zhuravleva, Anastasia.
The last interglacial, MIS (Marine Isotope Stage) 5e, lasting from about ~129 to 116 ka, holds important implications for the projected global warming, as this geological interval is believed to have been significantly warmer-than-preindustrial. This thesis refines the current understanding of the MIS 5e paleoceanography in the subarctic and subtropical North Atlantic, providing new insights into ice-sheets dynamics and cross-latitudinal climatic teleconnections. For this purpose, a multi-proxy dataset comprising stable isotope compositions, foraminiferal assemblages and lithic as well as X-ray fluorescence data was produced using marine sediments from the Nordic Seas and the Bahama region. Several lines of evidence from the Nordic Seas suggest a strong...

Rapid switches in subpolar North Atlantic hydrography and climate during the Last Interglacial (MIS 5e) ArchiMer
Irvali, Nil; Ninnemann, Ulysses S.; Galaasen, Eirik V.; Rosenthal, Yair; Kroon, Dick; Oppo, Delia W.; Kleiven, Helga F.; Darling, Kate F.; Kissel, Catherine.
At the peak of the previous interglacial period, North Atlantic and subpolar climate shared many features in common with projections of our future climate, including warmer-than-present conditions and a diminished Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS). Here we portray changes in North Atlantic hydrography linked with Greenland climate during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e using (sub)centennially sampled records of planktonic foraminiferal isotopes and assemblage counts and ice-rafted debris counts, as well as modern analog technique and Mg/Ca-based paleothermometry. We use the core MD03-2664 recovered from a high accumulation rate site (similar to 34 cm/kyr) on the Eirik sediment drift (57 degrees 26.34'N, 48 degrees 36.35'W). The results indicate that surface waters...
